2023 is a very special and unusual year in the history of Mu Phi Epsilon. First, on 13 November, the fraternity itself will celebrate its 120th birthday! But 2023 also marks the 60th birthday of the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, which was created in 1963 to mark the 60th anniversary year of the fraternity. This means that this year, for the only time ever, the fraternity is exactly twice the age of the foundation, and both organizations are celebrating special milestone birthdays—a 60th, or diamond, anniversary for the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, and a 120th (“double diamond”?) anniversary for Mu Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

100% of all contributions are made payable to the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation. As part of this special campaign, the Foundation will grant 2/3 of all contributions back to the Mu Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

Consequently, this year we’re asking our members to consider putting a little extra “sparkle” in both observances with our 120/60 Campaign. The campaign builds on our historic tradition of “Founders Day Pennies,” in which members contributed a penny for every year of the fraternity’s existence, originally to fund the Composition and Musicological Research Competitions that now are among the many programs run by the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation for the benefit of Mu Phi Epsilon’s members but which originally predated the establishment of the foundation and helped demonstrate the need for it. We want to encourage all members and chapters to consider a special 120/60 Campaign birthday gift of the equivalent of 120 of any denomination of currency that fits your own finances—maybe 120 $1 bills ($120) or 120 $5 bills ($600) or 120 Kennedy half-dollars ($60). We hope that, like the founders of Mu Phi Epsilon in 1903 and the founders of the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation in 1963, in 2023 each of you will help make the dream of a “brilliant” future for both organizations a reality through a birthday gift on this 120th Founders Day, 13 November 2023.
