Mu Phi Epsilon is a coeducational, professional music fraternity whose mission is:
- To advance music in the community, nation, and throughout the world;
- To promote musicianship, scholarship, music therapy, and music education, with emphasis on service through music; and
- To enhance loyalty to the Alma Mater and develop true bonds of friendship.
Mu Phi Epsilon was founded by Dr. Winthrop S. Sterling and Elizabeth Mathias Fuqua on November 13, 1903, at the Metropolitan College of Music, Cincinnati, Ohio. The Fraternity’s membership is composed of collegiate chapters, alumni chapters and allied members.
The San Francisco Alumni Chapter was installed on November 17, 1929. At that time members in the South Bay and East Bay were a part of our group. Since then the Palo Chapter branched off to form its own Chapter in 1955. The Berkeley Chapter branched off and was installed in 1959.
The San Francisco Alumni Chapter has members living in San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma Counties. Our membership includes music performers, educators, therapists, composers, church music leaders, organists/pianists. Our emphasis is service through music.
