Fraternity Contests and Awards

In addition to the many grants and scholarships offered by the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, the Mu Phi Epsilon International Fraternity offers several contests and awards.

Marian Bowker Davidson Collaborative Pianist Award (announced Fall 2009, deadline March 1, 2010)

Affiliated members in good standing may apply for this $1,000 award, given to support a project for a collaborative pianist (piano, organ or other keyboard instrument), the proposed project to develop performance skills, to allow further non-academic study, or to facilitate some special project.  The award is not limited by age, financial need, or projects in the United States.

Musicological Research Contest (announced Fall 2009, deadline March 1, 2010)
The Musicological Research Contest was established by Mu Phi Epsilon to promote interest and growth among its members in music research.
The award categories are:
$400.00 Ph.D. dissertations in musicology, historical musicology, ethnomusicology or music history.
$350.00 dissertations in other doctorates DMA or Ed.D, or masters of music or arts thesis in musicology, historical musicology, ethnomusicology or music history.
$250.00 other graduate thesis, graduate papers or independent research papers.
$200.00 undergraduate research papers, independent projects or term papers.

Original Composition Contest (announced Fall 2010, deadline March 1, 2011)

The contest consists of three divisions:
DIVISION I: Undergraduate Collegiate Members
Class A: Large works: No time limit. Award: $250
Class B: Any form for instrument(s) or voice(s) – up to six minutes in length. Award: $200
DIVISION II: Graduate Students & Alumni Members except former First Prize Winners in this division. Class A: Large works: No time limit. Award: $350
Class B: Any form for instrument(s) or voice(s) – up to six minutes in length. Award $250
DIVISION III: Former First Prize Winners
Class A: Any Form.  No time limit Award:  $400

Mary Alice Cox Award for Lifelong Learning (offered only in convention years)

As a result of a generous bequest from Mary Alice Cox, Beta Omega, Muncie Alumni, the Fraternity has established a fund whose purpose is the continued or renewed development or the mid-career transition of its members in any field of professional music. The award can be used for continued or renewed professional development in any field of professional music, including but not limited to performance, composition, pedagogy and education, music therapy, music administration, and music technology. The recipient will be chosen from alumni who have maintained their affiliation for twenty or more years whether through alumni chapters or allied membership. Whenever possible, the recipient will be announced at the international convention.
